Hello, hello.
0:08 - 0:12
How are you doing my friends?
0:12 - 0:16
I hope you are doing well today.
0:16 - 0:22
I hope you are enjoying your English journey.
0:22 - 0:27
I know you might be feeling frustrated.
0:27 - 0:58
You might be feeling frustrated because you can understand me in these videos and maybe you can understand a lot of native speakers when they speak, but maybe you struggle to speak English yourself.
0:58 - 1:03
Let's talk about it.
1:03 - 1:22
So I want to understand more about why you say you can't speak.
1:22 - 1:31
Is it that the words disappear when you try to speak?
1:31 - 1:36
Do you struggle to make sentences?
1:36 - 1:50
Do you struggle to make sentences because you don't know how or because you can't think of them in the moment?
1:50 - 2:03
I have some ideas about why you can't think about what you want to say in the moment.
2:03 - 2:08
Maybe you're afraid of making mistakes.
2:08 - 2:25
You might be afraid of making mistakes because you don't want other people to laugh at you or judge you or make fun of you.
2:25 - 2:35
You want to make a good impression or maybe you're a perfectionist.
2:35 - 2:40
You need to say it perfectly.
2:40 - 2:48
So there are a few things I want to talk about here.
2:48 - 2:58
I want you to think about how mistakes are part of the learning process.
2:58 - 3:03
You can't progress without mistakes.
3:03 - 3:07
Mistakes are our teachers.
3:07 - 3:10
Mistakes are tools.
3:11 - 3:16
We use mistakes to improve.
3:16 - 3:28
Mistakes are not bad and you are not a bad speaker because you make mistakes.
3:28 - 3:30
You're a learner.
3:30 - 3:37
You should make mistakes and let mistakes teach you.
3:37 - 3:44
This is also true if you are a perfectionist.
3:44 - 3:49
Is it possible to make perfect art?
3:49 - 3:50
I think not.
3:51 - 4:09
I think there's no such thing as perfect art because one person says this is perfect but another person says no it isn't.
4:09 - 4:11
Who is right?
4:11 - 4:13
Who is wrong?
4:13 - 4:14
Neither.
4:14 - 4:19
Language is more art than science.
4:19 - 4:22
Focus on communication.
4:22 - 4:28
If you are able to communicate you succeed.
4:28 - 4:37
I also want you to know about something called the listening speaking gap.
4:37 - 4:52
In the language acquisition process being able to understand more than you can produce is a hundred percent completely normal.
4:52 - 5:00
Listening feels easier than speaking for a few reasons.
5:00 - 5:12
When you are listening you don't have to understand every word in order to understand the overall meaning.
5:12 - 5:36
When you're speaking, speaking is all about multitasking because you have to recall words, consider grammar, make the right sounds and do it all pretty quickly.
5:36 - 5:41
When you're listening you can do this privately.
5:41 - 5:51
When you're speaking you do this publicly but again this is all very normal.
5:51 - 5:54
So what can we do about it?
5:54 - 6:05
Let me give you some tips but before I do don't worry about making fast progress.
6:05 - 6:11
We're looking for small improvements over time.
6:11 - 6:14
My first tip is shadowing.
6:14 - 6:19
Listen to audio then repeat what you hear.
6:19 - 6:30
This will start to exercise your mouth muscles so it will feel more familiar to speak English.
6:30 - 6:35
I recommend shadowing native speakers you like.
6:35 - 6:38
You can shadow me for example.
6:38 - 6:43
My second tip is find a conversation partner.
6:43 - 6:48
English is a very popular language to learn.
6:48 - 6:57
You might want to try an app like HelloTalk where you can find conversation partners for free.
6:57 - 7:04
It will feel uncomfortable in the beginning and that's okay.
7:04 - 7:12
It will only feel comfortable if you continue.
7:12 - 7:19
My third tip is start talking to yourself.
7:19 - 7:26
This might sound a little strange but honestly try it.
7:26 - 7:45
As you go about your day cooking, cleaning, going to work, going for a walk, shopping at the store, make sentences and I mean say them out loud.
7:45 - 7:48
Make sentences about what you're doing.
7:48 - 7:52
Make sentences about what you're seeing.
7:53 - 7:59
Make sentences about what you're thinking or feeling.
7:59 - 8:06
In general the goal is to practice a little bit every day.
8:06 - 8:11
Over time you will become more comfortable speaking.
8:11 - 8:20
Remember that progress takes time but it is possible and you can do it.
8:20 - 8:22
I know you can.
8:22 - 8:26
That's all I have for today friends.
8:26 - 8:28
Thanks for watching.
8:28 - 8:30
Until next time.
8:30 - 8:30
Bye.
